Sheriff’s deputy involved in interstate wreck

Published: 9:47 AM, 08/20/2008

Between the Roane and Loudon county lines on Interstate 40 Sunday morning, five vehicles including a Loudon County Sheriff’s Department’s cruiser were involved in a wreck, authorities said.

Chief Deputy Tony Aikens said Deputy T.J. Scarborough was “sitting in the emergency lane with the blue lights on when a tractor trailer lost control.”  He said one of two tractor trailers involved in the crash was hauling a cotton candy trailer, which came loose and hit the officer’s cruiser, causing roughly $9,000 in damages.

The incident occurred in the eastbound lane, in between mile markers 359 and 360, forcing traffic to be diverted through Gallaher Road at Exit 356.

Scarborough was taken by a private vehicle to Fort Loudoun Medical Center for “very minor injuries,” Aikens said.  No other injuries were reported, the chief deputy added.
