The Greenback School girls basketball team picked up a much-needed win Monday night, dominating Berean Christian 71-13.
The Lady Cherokees had lost five in a row heading into the game and have been playing without senior point guard Sarah Rhyne, who is nursing an injury.
On Monday, the team put in its second-highest point total of the season, the highest coming in a meeting with Berean earlier in the season.
Sophomore Meghan Russell and eighth-grader Audrey Anderson, who joined the varsity team at the conclusion of the middle school season, each scored 16 points in the game to lead all players.
Russell hit seven times from the field, all two-point shots, while Anderson picked up five points at the free-throw line and hit once from three, her first make from beyond the arc since joining the varsity team.
Senior Courtneay Sheedy added 13 points, hitting two from beyond the arc, and junior Autumn Tipton scored 10 to round out double-digit scorers for the Lady Cherokees.
Defensively, Greenback was on lock down. They held Berean to no more than six points in any quarter and kept the Lady Eagles scoreless in the third.
The win locked up at least a sixth-place finish for the girls. They played Rockwood Tuesday night for a shot at possibly moving up to fifth.
Greenback's boys saw its losing streak extended to eight Monday with a 53-43 defeat.
As has been a theme for much of the season, the team did not have much success on the offensive side of the ball. Only senior Austin Bryant, with 17 points, and junior Josh Pace, with 12 points, were able to score in double digits.
With the loss, the Cherokees are assured a finish no better than seventh just ahead of Tennessee School for the Deaf.
Greenback played district opponent Rockwood Tuesday night, host the Knoxville Ambassadors Thursday and finish the season Monday at TSD. The Cherokees must beat TSD to assure they do not finish last in district standings.
Thursday night will be senior night for the Cherokees. The girls will play at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow.
The Cherokees split with the Ambassadors earlier in the season.
