Gary "Frog" Dye is among those set to be inducted into Lenoir City High School's Sports Hall of Fame Oct. 6, honored for his performance on the golf course for the Panthers.

"I kind of couldn't believe it," Dye said. "It's hard to put into words really. It was just great."

Dye shot par or better in the majority of his time playing at Lenoir City and earned MVP honors at Lenoir City's top golfer 1973-1975. As a senior Dye helped to team win 45 of 51 matches.

Dye came away with the Individual Low Medalist Trophy at the Smoky Mountain Prep Invitation Tournament in 1975 with a 36-hole score of 155, picking up 15 pars and six birdies over two days.

He also won the District 5 title medalist honors with an 18-hold 76. Dye also won at Clinton, Quail Creek, La Follette and several other courses that year.

Dye earned a scholarship to Hiwassee Junior College, becoming the first Lenoir City golfer to earn a scholarship, something he said stood out most among his accomplishments on the course.

Dye's wife, Rebecca Hensley Dye, said her husband deserved the Hall of Fame, "because of the man he is."

"My husband is one of the kindest people on God's Earth," she wrote. "A wonderful husband, father and pappa."

Dye will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame Oct. 6.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. with registration at 6 p.m.

Saturday is the last day to make reservations to attend the banquet.

Dye said it was the beauty of the game that attracted him to the sport.

"It's just all of it," he said. "All golf courses, or 98 percent of them, are beautiful. They're good and peaceful and it's just you against the course."
