For the second year in a row, Greenback Hoppers' Coach Brian Hanley's team faced Sweetwater in the Sequoyah Youth Football Conference Super Bowl. And for the second year in a row, the game went to overtime.
But unlike last year's 6-0 Cherokee victory, the Greenback Hoppers (9-3) fell short, dropping a 22-20 decision. Knotted at 14-14, Sweetwater (12-0) took its opening possession of overtime in for the touchdown and followed up with a critical conversion.
The Cherokees responded when running back Josh Edwards swept left and outran the coverage to the left corner of the end zone. But on the game-saving conversion attempt, a halfback pass play was sacked, delivering the championship to Sweetwater.
"Our boys played their hearts out," said Hanley. "I'm proud of their effort." The Cherokees answered Sweetwater step-for-step the entire game, taking an 8-8 tie into halftime. Both teams scored in the third quarter for a 14-14 score that lasted through the end of the fourth period.
Overtime in the Sequoyah Conference gives each team a first-and-goal opportunity from the opponent's ten yard line. With three touchdowns on the night and 93 total yards, Edwards was named Greenback's Best Offensive player. Hunter Hampton was named Best Lineman.
Breeden Gilbert added 69 yards rushing. Hampton led defensively with five tackles followed by Mason Sliger and Gilbert with four each.
