Janice Powell Hebble, 81, Philadelphia, passed away Monday afternoon following a brief illness. She was a long-time member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Loudon.
After attending Ohio University, Jan graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. Later she earned her master's degree in education administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. A registered nurse for nearly 50 years, Jan taught nursing at Fort Sanders School of Nursing. A native of Rutland, Ohio, Jan spent several summers as a Girl Scout camp counselor at Camp Kenjockety in Ohio and remained in touch with her fellow counselors for over 60 years. She loved the outdoors, including camping, sailing and her garden in later years. She especially loved taking her nursing students on camping and caving trips to participate in mock disaster drills.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, the late Benjamin N. Powell and Nora Bradford Powell; her brother, Dr. Bradford Powell; her sister, Alice Powell Davis, and her brother-in-law, W. Rex Davis, all from Ohio.
A loving wife and mother, she is survived by her husband of 58 years, Thomas L. Hebble of Philadelphia; her daughter, Julie A. Hebble, also of Philadelphia; her son, Steven T. Hebble of Oak Ridge; her son, Robert L. Hebble and fiancée, Sara Ellis, of Frankfort, Ky., and special friend, Milton Arledge of McMinnville; her grandson, Clif Pate and wife, Jennifer, of Knoxville; grandson, Bradford Pate of McMinnville; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, Dianne Annis of Columbus, Ohio, and Sherry Dodson of Pittsboro, N.C., whom she regarded as sisters.
A celebration of Jan's life will be held 3 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Loudon. A reception will follow the service at the church.
