Nellie Louise Hardy Cleveland, lovingly known as Mamma Nell and Nanny, 89, Loudon, took off mortality and put on immortality on Wednesday morning, Feb. 27, 2013 at Signature Care and Rehabilitation Center in Harriman following a lengthy illness.
Nellie was one of 12 children born to the late Columbus and Elizabeth Deathridge Hardy. She was a graduate of Pearl High School in Nashville. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, program chairperson and kitchen committee until her health began to fail.
Nellie was active in the Missionary Society. She served many years as a board member of the Mid-East Action Community Agency. Nellie was very active with the Loudon District Association.
In addition to her parents she was preceded by her husband, Eli (Phil) Cleveland; son, Paul Jerry Batey; grandson, Patrick "Oz" Batey; brothers, John, William Jr. and Virgil Hardy; sisters, Mary Kate Clark, Florence Moore, Bonnie Kline, Beatrice Vaughter and Rose Sadler.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory, devoted daughter-in-law, Margie Moore of Harriman; sons, Robert (Nida) Batey of Vacaville, Calif. and Donald (Mary) Cleveland of Chattanooga; eight grandchildren, Yalonda and Shawn Batey of California, Tisa Batey Walker of Atlanta, Monique "Nikie" Batey of Fayetteville, Ga., Yalanda (Kerry) Collier of St. Louis, Mo., Veta Crosswhite of St. Louis, Mo., Dwight Crosswhite of Knoxville, Steven Crosswhite of Nashville.; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Geneva (Charles) Rowland and Addie Houston of Dayton, Ohio; Beulah Black of Alcoa; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Christine Cleveland of Philadelphia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday prior to funeral services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Loudon Funeral Home Chapel.
