Gerald “Gene” Hamby, 84, born Dec. 25, 1927, of Lenoir City, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at 7:30 a.m. at Fort Loudoun Medical Center in Lenoir City after a lengthy illness.

Gene was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City, a graduate of Hiwassee Dam High School in Murphy, N.C., and veteran of the Army Air Force. He was retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory after 40 years of service in the Instrumentation and Controls Division. Gene was a longtime public servant in his community of Lenoir City, serving 28 years on the Lenoir City Council and LCUB Power Board, 12 years on the Lenoir City Board of Education and various terms on the Public Housing Authority, Loudon County Hospital Board, Committee of 100, Chamber of Commerce, Civitan Club and Lenoir City Sports Hall of Fame Committee. Gene also was a charter member of the Lenoir City Quarterback Club as well as an honored inductee into the Lenoir City Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Gene leaves a legacy of unwavering integrity, loyalty and commitment to his community and was a positive influence on many lives.

Gene is preceded in death by his father, George Alger Hamby; mother, Callie Davis Hamby; and brothers, Grady, Guindle, Jesse, Winford and George Jr., as well as sisters-in-law, Willie Dutton Bruner and Dorothy Hamby.

Gene is survived by        his faithful and loving   wife of more than 60 years, Bobbie Dutton Hamby, and his son, Gary Douglas Hamby, both of Lenoir City. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Roma Hamby of Fort Payne, Ala., Lillian Hamby of Beulah, N.D., and Gerry Hamby of Greeneville, S.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rassie and Glen Condrey and Kenneth and Kay Dutton, all of Lenoir City, and Nancy and Robert Covington, of Kennesaw, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Amedysis Hospice and Home Health for the loving relationship they found with Gene and our family. Stu, Shelley and Amanda — We love you all, and we know that you loved Gene. Thanks also to the caring staff at Fort Loudoun Medical Center as well as Covenant Hospice for your care and support.

The family received friends from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at First Baptist Church in Lenoir City with the funeral immediately following at 5:15 p.m. with Dr. C.E. Jackson III and Dr. Dick DeMerchant officiating.

Family and friends will gather at the funeral home by 9:30 a.m. Sunday and proceed to Lakeview Cemetery for graveside services at 10 a.m. Pallbearers will be Tony Aikens, Glen Williams, Raymond Williams, Junior Collins, Jim Shields and Leon Shields.
